Improvisations on the Theme of an Irish Wall

In May 2013, Terry was Artistic Director of a collaborative wood art project in Ireland. Twenty-one wood artists from Ireland and around the world created an installation titled “Improvisations on the Theme of an Irish Wall” shown in the Visual Gallery in Carlow as part of the annual Eigse Art Festival. Again, the IWCS kindly supported this project by providing a film crew to document the process and also supporting the participation of Xiang Dong Wang from China.

Everyone worked so hard. At 2:030 a.m. in a field beside the workshop John Lee sandblasts pieces of the wall while the others stamp their feet in the cold and wait to move the next section up for treatment. What a memory!

Terry says, "It was an amazing six days where everyone worked with furious energy to create something that has never been done before – a 6.5 metre long wall made of wood that looked like a traditional Irish fieldstone wall. In fact it was something much more. Although it was the work of each of these artists, it was above all a collaborative effort and the wall belonged to everyone. It was filled with tiny secrets that were best seen by the children who visited the gallery. My heartfelt thanks go to all who gave so much to make this happen, particularly Glenn Lucas and Cornelia McCarthy, whose home we invaded and whose lives we turned upside down."
